About
Us
For
those who are wondering how we got started in this unique business….We
tasted the meat.
Yes,
2 Buffalo burgers just over 15 years ago turned into
a fully operational Buffalo Farm that was converted from our
family
dairy farm. I am the third generation to own and operate
the farm keeping it in the family for the next generation, who
are already helping and learning the business.
As we look back over the past 15 years, our
Buffalo "hobby" has transformed our lives. What began
as a small operation for our own personal use has turned into
a family business supplying our customers with over 6 tons of
Bison Meat between the retail store, our "Bison Wagon" concession
trailer, Restaurant, and small wholesale business. Trends of
healthier eating by many new people so far this year might even
double our sales for 2008.
We began raising Bison to improve our family's
health. Dan, who was diagnosed
at 29 with hereditary high blood pressure and put on medication that the doctor
said would be required for the rest of his life, no longer requires medication. His
blood pressure is now within normal readings without any medication, despite
the doctor's prediction. Mickey has struggled with high cholesterol
but eating a diet replacing beef with Bison meat has drastically reduced her
triglycerides and raised the ratio of "good cholesterol" to "bad cholesterol". Our
mission to improve our family's health has turned us into Buffalo believers-preaching
Bison's benefits to anyone who will listen.
Eating a healthy diet including Bison meat has lengthened our
lives. We
are certainly healthier than we were 15 years ago. And
despite all of the work that goes along with the farm, store, and
now restaurant,
we are also happier than we were 15 years ago. We have
had the pleasure to meet some wonderful people and make new friends
over the years. These include other Bison farmers, regular
customers, and people who are just passing through. It has
been a fantastic journey we hope will not come to an end anytime
soon.
We
hope to have well over 100 by the end of summer with all of
the new calves that will be born this spring and early summer.
Small farms like ours are springing up across America, preserving
and ensuring the Buffalo's future and providing you, the American
public, with a healthy choice…for an all-natural hormone
and antibiotic-free red meat alternative. I don't know about
you, but this new radiated beef that is out there just seems "unnatural".
Our animals are fed no animal by-products.
If you buy naturally raised,
grass fed Bison that is USDA inspected and handled
properly, buying radiated beef is not necessary. Our
Bison are processed under USDA inspection at McDonalds Meats
in Girard, PA professionally vacuumed-sealed for proper freshness
and appearance so you can see what you are buying.
We hope this information has
piqued your interest enough to come out with your family and
visit our family farm operation. There is no fee or admission
charge to view the animals, except for our special events. They
roam freely over their 150 acres of pasture year-round. You
may be lucky enough to see them up close to the fence. You
can view them in their natural state…grazing,
eating hay, bulls challenging each other and butting heads,
cow feeding their calves, all of the things that were almost
lost forever with the white man hunted them down in the late
1800s.
The Buffalo are no longer in danger of extinction.
And, as long there is a demand for this great-tasting and healthy
meat, they will not be endangered again.
On
behalf of the Wooden Nickel Buffalo Farm, Gift Shop and Restaurant,
thank you. We hope to see you soon. Come on in anytime to talk
